Fumed Oak Wood Flooring refers to a process of treating the oak hardwood flooring to change it’s color. This treatment involves putting the oak into an enclosed environment in which ammonia is released into the atmosphere. What happens is the ammonia causes the tannins in the wood to be brought to the surface changing the color of the wood. The closer the tannins are to the surface and the longer the oak is exposed to the ammonia, the darker the wood will appear. Furthermore, the higher the temperature in the chamber, the quicker the color change results will appear.

A fumed oak floor is perfect for high traffic areas because the color of the oak is being drawn to the surface. If this type of hardwood floor was to experience any minor scratching, the wood itself will maintain the same color throughout the board. We recommend the UV Urethane Oil Matte Finish on a Fumed White Oak Flooring to maintain the color of the hardwood and avoid any minor white scratches from any floor finish that contains Aluminum Oxide.
