Detailed Explanation
Daily and weekly
A felt-pad pass at the entryway, a soft-bristle broom or microfibre dust mop a few times a week, felt pads under every piece of furniture, and a firm “no shoes” (or at least no outdoor shoes) policy in high-use rooms. Most scratches that homeowners think come from pets actually come from grit tracked in on the soles of shoes.
Cleaning, by finish system
Water-based & UV-cured urethanes: a manufacturer- approved pH-neutral cleaner, lightly damp microfibre mop. Never wet- mop, never steam, never vinegar.
Hardwax oil: dedicated soap-based cleaner from the same finish system (e.g. Loba). Periodic refresher coats — usually yearly in high-traffic zones — keep the surface alive without a full refinish.
Oil-based urethane: similar pH-neutral cleaner; sheen will mellow with time.
Humidity, year-round
Aim to keep the home between roughly 35–55% relative humidity. A whole- home humidifier on the furnace handles BC winters; mindful summer airflow and dehumidification when needed handle the wet months.
What to do when something happens
Liquid spills: blot immediately. Scratches: leave them — most catch the eye much less than touch-up attempts. Dents in softer species: a damp cloth and a warm iron will lift many of them. When in doubt, ask before you experiment.
