Detailed Explanation
Species: harder helps, but isn't everything
Hickory (~1820 Janka), white oak (~1360), and ash (~1320) handle claw traffic better than softer species like walnut (~1010) or American cherry. Within a species, busier grain patterns and lower-sheen finishes hide minor scratching dramatically.
Finish: matte and repairable wins
Hardwax oil finishes are our default recommendation for active pet households — they're more easily spot-repaired and refreshed than urethane systems. Matte and dead-flat sheens hide micro-scratches; gloss telegraphs them.
The maintenance habits that actually matter
Keep claws trimmed. Wipe accidents the moment they happen — uric acid will darken any hardwood finish if left to sit. Felt pads on furniture. Mats at entries to capture grit on paws and shoes.
What we tell pet owners to expect
Some patina is inevitable, and on the right floor that patina is part of the character. Most clients tell us a year in that they stopped noticing what they used to obsess about.
