Aftercare
Caring for your newly sanded floor
A freshly refinished floor needs a little patience and the right routine to stay beautiful for decades. Follow these guidelines to protect your investment.
The first 30 days — cure time
- • Wait 24 hours before walking in socks, 72 hours before shoes.
- • Keep pets off for at least 48 hours; nails can mark soft finish.
- • Wait 5-7 days before replacing area rugs or furniture pads — the finish needs to breathe and fully cure.
- • No wet mopping or cleaning products for the first 7 days.
Daily & weekly cleaning
- • Sweep, dust mop, or vacuum (soft brush head) regularly to remove grit — the #1 cause of finish wear.
- • Spot clean spills immediately with a slightly damp cloth.
- • Use only a pH-neutral hardwood cleaner recommended for your finish (Loba, Bona, or Pallmann). Never use vinegar, ammonia, Murphy's Oil Soap, or steam mops.
- • Damp mop weekly — never wet. Water is hardwood's enemy.
Protect & prevent
- • Use felt pads under all furniture legs and replace them yearly.
- • Place walk-off mats at every exterior entry to trap grit and moisture.
- • Keep indoor humidity between 35–55% year-round to prevent gapping and cupping.
- • Trim pet nails and avoid high heels with worn tips.
Long-term care
- • Most finishes benefit from a maintenance recoat every 10–15 years — far cheaper than a full sand.
- • Address small scratches early before they reach raw wood.
- • Call us if you see cupping, gapping, or finish wear in traffic lanes — early intervention saves the floor.
